Questions and answers

Has Real Meat Directory verified these businesses?

No. Each listing was added from the business's own website and checked on October 18, 2026: the website was reachable and showed the business. Listings marked "Unclaimed" haven't been confirmed by the business, and their products, practices and certifications weren't checked. Listings are not endorsements or certifications.

What should I ask a butcher?

University of Illinois Extension notes that butchers know about meat grades and can suggest cuts for what you plan to cook. Good questions: Where does this meat come from, and which farms do you work with? Can you cut it to a certain thickness or portion size? Do you make your own sausage, ground meat or cured products?

How can I tell how meat was inspected?

Packaged meat and poultry from a USDA-inspected plant carries the USDA mark of inspection and an establishment number ("EST." for meat, "P-" for poultry). State-inspected meat carries a state mark and is generally sold only within that state. Meat custom-processed for an animal's owner is marked "Not for Sale."

Which of these states run their own meat inspection program?

According to USDA FSIS's list, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia run their own state meat and poultry inspection program, and Florida and Tennessee don't, so FSIS inspects plants there that need inspection.
